Private label spices: what the process actually involves

From first brief to first container: how a private-label spice or dehydrated onion project runs, what decisions you own, and where the timelines usually go.

Private label sounds like a packaging decision and turns out to be a series of small specification decisions. Here is what a project looks like from the inside, so you can plan around it.

The brief sets everything downstream

Four things determine most of the project: the product, the pack format, the destination market and the volume.

The destination market matters more than people expect, because labelling requirements differ and they are not negotiable. Nutritional panel format, allergen declaration, language requirements, net weight presentation. All of these are set by where the product will be sold, not where it is packed.

Blends take rounds

If you are packing a single product such as garlic powder, turmeric or chili flakes, sampling is straightforward. You approve the material and move on.

Custom blends are different. We work either from your recipe or from a description of the profile you want, and getting from a first attempt to something you are happy with usually takes two or three rounds. Build that into your timeline. A blend developed against a written brief alone almost never lands correctly on the first sample.

We hold no fixed blend SKUs, so every blend is made to order against your formulation.

Pack format is a commercial decision

Glass bottles and jars look right on a retail shelf and carry a quality signal that flexible packaging does not. They are also heavier, more expensive to ship, and breakable, which affects both freight cost and the packing specification.

We offer glass in a range of sizes (50 g, 100 g, 200 g and 500 g as the indicative set) alongside bulk formats. If you are supplying food service rather than retail, bulk kraft or HMHDPE is usually the better economics.

Artwork is yours, compliance is shared

You supply the label artwork. We check it against the destination market’s requirements and confirm the print specification, covering material, finish, dimensions and adhesive. Where something is missing or non-compliant we flag it before print rather than after.

Getting artwork right is the step that most often adds weeks, usually because a required declaration was missed and the file has to go back to a designer.

Then it is a normal shipment

Once the sample is approved and the artwork is signed off, a private-label order runs like any other export order: production, packing, documentation, and shipping on your chosen Incoterm from your preferred Indian port.

A realistic timeline

For a single product in an existing pack format, expect a few weeks from brief to production, most of it artwork. For a custom blend in a new pack format, plan for longer, as the blend rounds and the print setup run in sequence rather than in parallel.

If you have a launch date, tell us at the brief stage. It changes what we recommend.
